THE CORONATION RESERVE - The Coronation Reserve was purchased as a scenic reserve in 1912 and named to commemorate the coronation of King George V. This area of native bush contains many cultural and heritage sites, which include two Maori pa sites and more than 100 food storage pits, although these are now difficult to recognise unless one knows what they are looking for. It also has terraces and platforms from the pa era. There are impressive stands of mature native trees, including totara, tanekaha, nikau, rimu and several large kauri. There are also a number of tree fern groves and a wide variety of NZ native ferns, ground plants shrubs and even tree orchids. There are two lookout points with great views of the city and harbour, one on Route 1, the other on Route 3. Route two takes you through the most rugged and somewhat dangerous part of the reserve, as in parts the track is but a few inches wide, but it is the most original part of the track, almost as it was in the days of the pa that was on this Route.
Council has installed a number of stair cases in the difficult parts of the climb up from 3 entrance points, Kauika Road West. The Quarry Arts Centre and the Russell Road entrance. Tracks are marked with orange way markers, so stick to the tracks and you will have a very enjoyable walk.
