In this section we look at some of the larger native trees growing in the Coronation Reserve.
King of the Northland bush Agathis australis - the Kauri.
The trunk of a youngish kauri, no more than 200 years old.
The female cone of a kauri. the male is rod shaped.
KOHEKOHE - Dysoxylum spectabile.
A Kohekohe sapling.
The canopy of a large Kohekohe - Dysoxylum spectabile.
The trunk base of the Kohekohe - Dysoxylum spectabile.
Dacrydium cupressinum - Rimu.
Rimu - Dacrydium cupressinum - adult foliage. One of the dominant trees in the Coronation Reserve.
A juvenile Rimu - Dacrydium cupressinum.
Possibly Nestegis - Maire.
Nestegis cunninghamii - black maire.
A juvenile Tanekaha - Phyllocladus trichomanoides. A tree up to 21m.
The foliage of Tanekaha - Phyllocladus trichomanoides. Grows in North Island with the exception of the Wellington region. Also grows in the Nelson/Marlborough region.
Tanekaha (Phyllocladus trichomanoides). The trunk is often mistaken for a young Kauri.
Adult Tanekaha - one of the dominant trees in the Coronation Reserve.
A juvenile Totara tree - Podocarpus totara. One of the dominant trees in the Coronation Reserve.
The bark of a mature totara tree. Grows to 30m.
Juvenile Karaka - Corynocarpus laevigatus. Grows to 15m.
A large Nikau Palm with flowerhead - Rhopalostylis sapida.

A juvenile Pseudopanax - Five finger
To many leaves for a five-finger, perhaps a different species of Pseudopanax.
